Karijini –
Barn Hill
After the
high of Exmouth and its stunning beaches we headed off to Karijini. The first
walk we did provided us with a lot of fly’s to annoy us but also some stunning
waterfalls and swimming holes alongside some of the most beautiful gorges I
have ever seen. Being able to have a swim in between walking was definitely
needed because of the 38 degree heat. Sorry Grandma but I did do a little bit
of rock climbing again.
The second walk we did was by
far the best walk I have ever done. There was more swimming then walking and
more waterfalls. The first swimming hole had a rope swing and like all kids
would we gave it a try. Unfortunantly our fun got cut short by the rangers who
spent the rest of the aternoon trying to get the rope out of the tree. We then
continued walking, headed for the circular pool, it took us a while because we
looked for any possible place to swim along the way.
The circular pool was
amazing, it was at the end of the gorge and it was freezing. There was a nice
ledge to jump off but unfortunantly you had to swim through a heap of leaches
to get there. Luckily there was only about 2 meters of water with them. The small waterfall was about 20 degrees
warmer then the actual pool so everytime you jumped in you got a slight shock.
After
Karijini we went to 80 mile beach, which has nothing but an 80 mile beach full
of fishermen and shells. The highlight of my time there was seeing the
occasional hermet crab. The beach was littered with sharks so you couldn’t swim
but the sunsets there were amazing.
Barn hill
was pretty much the same as 80 mile apart from this time if you didn’t want to
fish you could at least have reception to talk to people. We also had an
interesting experience in the Zodiac. After the boys went out dad got sea sick
and couldn’t drive the boat back to the beach where the car was. After mum got
a quick crash course in how to drive the zodiac, I jumped in the boat with her
and we drove off. We got to the beach fine but while we were putting into shore
we got hit by a wave. After mum fell out of the boat I was able to surf it into
shore, laughing all the way in.
