Tamsyn. Home - Robe

I think I’m something like 5 days into the 4 month trip so far and we have already been to 3 different places and finally have found ourselves in South Australia.

Our first stop was The Grampians and it was amazing, unlike anything I have ever seen before. Wild animals, especially kangaroos and emus were everywhere. They had the only wood fire heated pool in Australia, which was beautiful but really heavily chlorinated.

According to mum, you don’t go to The Grampians without climbing to the Pinnacle, so on our second day we went for what was meant to be a walk but ended up being a bit of a rock climb for me. Due to being a little bored I tried to find any possible rock that I could climb, much to grandma’s disgust. The view from the top was incredible, we could see the caravan park and pretty much anything else that was in The Grampians. But once I let my eyes look further then what was below us and more to the horizon it occurred to me that we were literally in the middle of nowhere.

Apart from walking there’s not a lot that you can do in the Grampians but due to Hammond’s recommendation, we went to the zoo. Driving into the gate it looked like the dodgiest place. By the looks of it, it was only going to have a few kangaroos, a wombat and possibly an emu if we were lucky. But I guess looks can be deceiving because it was incredible.

There were cute little animals everywhere and a cheater that paced up and down its cage eyeing off the animals in the opposite cage. The best thing for me, was making 2 new friends in 2 albino dingos called Bob and Cat (Cat being short for catastrophe). Bob was very affectionate and up for a bit of a kiss. Well, actually a lot of a kiss. Even with the dodging of the kisses it was still really amazing.

The day before we left we ran into Sunrise and decided it would be funny to try get on TV. Well we did, and anyone who watched sunrise got to see me looking like I was straight out of a horror movie and like I wanted to kill everyone, pretty much a summary of my morning mood actually.

Our next stop, Mt Gambier consisted of sink holes and possums. We arrived at the show grounds that was going to be our home for the night. There’s not a whole lot in Mt Gambier, apart from 2 sinkholes that sound pretty weird and boring but they were amazing. We went at night because we were told that the possums come out. Well there definitely were possums and they were a little friendlier then we originally thought. They were up for a bit of a pat but occasionally mistook my finger for food.

The garden in the sinkhole was beautiful and the lighting made it look like something out of a fairy-tale. But with all the beauty came a history lesson. We went in to watch a “short 15 minute film” that ended up going for an hour and was very annoying to watch. The presenter was incredibly enthusiastic about all his rocks. He would also climb up the front of rocks and made it look like he was some type of super human, when in reality we could see the road the whole time. After the film we moved onto robe, where I finally found myself a beach.

Robe is beautiful, the beach is stunning and by the sounds of the weather I’m in for a few good days of tanning, or just burning we’ll figure that one out soon enough. It’s taken a while but I’m starting to get over my homesickness, saying that I still miss everyone like crazy but I’ll be back in something like 95 days.

  1. Thanks for your comprehensive write up Taz! Brilliant writing and so great to hear what you've all been up to. The photos are fantastic too - that dingo is gorgeous!
Dan and I went to the Grampians last year and we loved it too. We stayed at a house that was very beautiful and isolated - our only companions were the kangaroos and the birdlife. Bliss!
Great to hear that you did a bit of rock climbing while you were there, Dan did a heap when we were in the area - I just did lots of hiking :)
Hope you all continue to have a magic time, and that the homesickness (which is understandable when you have such an ace home!) continues to abate.
Love to you and to all the Pentland crew,
    Aunty Liz Xxx
